"The
Apprentices of Great Britain 1710-1774":
A tax was paid on apprenticeship bindings from 1710-1810. Those from
1710-1774 have been indexed by the Society of Genealogists and are in typescript
form. The names & details were extracted from the Inland Revenue Books at
the PRO, London. Poor Apprenticeships (paid by a parish or charity) and
boys bound to relatives were usually exempt from stamp duty. Dorothy Loudon has
very kindly extracted the ELLETT references using
microfiche copies of the typescript index.
