Can I use the information from this website elsewhere? The information on this website has been collected from public domain sources and can be viewed here free of charge to anyone with a family interest in the Ellett surname. The data contained here must not be copied or used for commercial interest nor for any fee paying product. It has been collected by volunteer effort and should not be reproduced in any form without prior permission of the web maintainer. Back to Top
How accurate is the data here? The information is published "as is" and it is up to each individual to verify the information is correct. Please remember that all of this information has been transcribed from numerous sources and you should ALWAYS check the original source. Information is open to being misread, incorrectly spelled or just typed up wrongly! Please treat this as a finding aid or an index rather than a definitive answer! Also, please bear in mind that names may be different to those you expect for example Eliza could also be Elizabeth. Back to Top
Will I find my family tree here? This website is a "bare bones" collection of names, dates and
events taken from many different sources. It will not give you a family tree or
a family history taken by itself. It is however a very useful tool to save you
time and money in searching records that have already been searched by someone
else. Back to Top
How can I help? Many ways!! Even if you give me details of your own family tree as far back as you have it, that will expand the collection offline. Copies of certificates, wills, newspaper clippings etc are always useful. Most people will have access to some form of archive repository whether it is in the UK or outside. Many of these places have indexed data that can be searched fairly easily for any Ellett entries. Even just to know that there are no Elletts listed for a particular type of record saves people time. I am new to family tree research. How can I get more help?If you are new to genealogy or researching your family history, I would strongly recommend you start by borrowing or buying a good beginner's guide which will explain (almost!) everything you need to know. One of my favourite books is "Tracing Your Family Tree" by Jean Cole and John Titford which covers a large amount of information in simple, user-friendly language and makes a fantastic reference book whatever your level of experience. There are a number of useful websites which will also provide you with further information and usually a large number of links to other relevant websites. Two of the sites I use most frequently and which contain many excellent links are the GENUKI page which has a huge amount of information for researchers interested in the United Kingdom and Ireland and Cyndi's List which has a mass of links, categorised into topics. Mailing lists are a fantastic resource and most people are always willing to help new researchers with ideas and suggestions. The main thing to remember is that whilst the internet has made researching much simpler you should not expect to uncover your family tree back to 1066 in an instant and should be very wary if you do find it!! Good old fashioned research is still the best way to establish an accurate family tree and it is of course much more fun to do it yourself rather than have it handed to you on a plate! Back to Top
What are mailing lists?A mailing list is the online equivalent of a chat down the pub or a multi-party telephone conversation! It is a discussion forum where participants subscribe to a list and receive messages by e-mail. There are no costs and unless you send a message to the forum, no-one else knows you are there so you can read everyone else's messages without having to say anything back! They can be extremely useful for sharing ideas and tips and for the family tree researcher are almost considered a necessity! Copyright © 2002 Mandi Cassidy. All rights reserved.
