As in Births, Marriages and Deaths!See also Certificates and Scotland entriesEngland and WalesFrom 1 July 1837, all births, marriages and deaths in England and Wales have been officially recorded and certificates issued to the relevant persons. However, not all events were recorded (especially births) until 1874 when the Registrar was required to search out and record any births, marriages and deaths and there were fines for people who failed to notify the registrar of an event within a specified limit. The indexes are divided into four quarters for each year. So, the March quarter contains events registered in January, February and March, the June quarter includes events registered in April, May and June and so on for September and December. Please note that it is when the event is registered that is recorded in the index so if a child was born in December but not registered until January, they would appear in the March quarter of the following year. The indexes themselves only give a limited amount of information and a copy of the certificate would be required to obtain full details. I have either purchased, or been given, copies of quite a lot of certificates. Basic details of the information on these certificates is listed here although information on this website on living individuals is restricted.
ScotlandThe online searchable database for Scottish records is at http://www.origins.net. The website introduces the data by saying "The Scots Origins database contains fully searchable indexes of the Old Parish Registers of births/baptisms and banns/marriages dating from 1553 to 1854, indexes to the Statutory Registers of births and marriages from 1855 to 1899, indexes to the Statutory Registers of deaths for 1855 to 1924, and the index to census records for 1891. One additional year of births/deaths/marriage index data is added per annum (1900, 1901 etc.). The restriction to data over 100 years old is GROS policy, to protect the privacy of living persons." It must be remembered that these are only indexes. I searched the records using the spelling Ell?t* which would produce surnames spelt as Ellett, Ellet, Ellot, Elletson etc and would hopefully cover most variations except Elliott which had a very high incidence rate and was therefore not included on this occasion. I searched from 1719 to 1927 inclusive and the results can be seen here.
